How to Create Basic Shapes in CorelDRAW

create shapes in coreldraw

A shape is a form of an object, or its external boundary, outlines or external surface. Shapes are an important building block for graphic design. With CorelDRAW, you can create various geometric and freeform shapes.
The basic tool to draw a rectangle is the rectangle tool (F6). Select the tool. Drag in the document till you get your desired size of the rectangle. We can use this rectangle tool to create a square by simply holding CTRL key on your keyboard. Then drag to create a square.

If you want to create a rectangle from inside outwards, hold the SHIFT key while drawing to achieve this, hold SHIFT + CTRL for square.

We can easily draw a rectangle by using the 3-point rectangle tool. It will create a rectangle at an angle. You have the ability to specify the angle of rotation by using the property panel. You can also determine the height and width of the rectangle

To create a rectangle that covers your whole working document, double-click on the rectangle tool.

Rounded Corners in a Rectangle

Draw a rectangle or square. Go to the property panel. Chose Round Corner or Scalloped Corner or Chamfered Corner.

Type in any value in the Corner Radius. If you want the values to apply to all the corners of the rectangle, click Edit corners together.  You can also enable or disable Relative corner scaling. This function scale your corners according to the size of the shape you created.

Use the Shape tool to resize the corners of the rectangle. Hold CTRL key to enable you to reshape a specific corner.

Creating Circle, Ellipse, and Arcs

You can draw an ellipse using Ellipse tool (F7)

Drag diagonally on the drawing space to create an ellipse. Hold CTRL key if you want to create a perfect circle. Hold the SHIFT key while drawing an ellipse to draw from the center outwards.

The 3-Point Ellipse tool helps to create an ellipse at an angle. Drag across to create the width and drag upwards or downwards to create the height

To draw an arc or pie,  choose the ellipse tool and then go to the property panel. Choose arc or pie button. You can drag on the working document to create. Hold CTRL to constrain the proportion.

You can change the direction, the rotation. You can also mirror vertically or horizontally.

You can alternatively double-click on the ellipse tool. It will bring up the toolbox, you can choose the arc or pie. You can specify the angles of starting and ending points

Drawing Polygons and Stars

We can create polygons with CorelDRAW.  Select the Polygon tool (Y) and then drag on the document to create. Hold SHIFT key to draw from the center and hold CTRL to constrain the proportion while drawing. To specify the number of sides of the polygon, go to the property bar and input a value.

You can also convert a polygon to a star by using the Shape tool (F10) and dragging on the nodes till you get the star shape.

To draw a star, select the Star tool and drag on the document to create. If it is a complex star, select the tool and drag to create. You can change the number of sides and sharpness in the property panel.

Creating Spiral Shapes

The two basic form of spiral shapes in CorelDRAW are Logarithmic (which expand with increasing distance between revolution), and Symmetrical (with equal distance between revolutions). To create a spiral shape, select the spiral tool. Go to the property panel and chose the spiral revolutions, symmetrical or logarithmic revolution

Working with Grids

Select the Graph tool using keyboard letter D.

In the property panel, choose both the number of rows (the value at the bottom) and columns (the value on top).

You can ungroup a grid by selecting the grid with the Pick tool. Then go to Object > Group > Ungroup Objects.

You can create a predefined shape by using the property panel. Select the Basic shapes, arrows shapes, flowchart shapes, banner shapes or callout shapes in the tool panel.

Go to the property panel and chose perfect shapes. You can then create your shape.

With the help of Smart drawing tool, we can now create shapes by simple guesses. CorelDRAW will help you reshape your freehand drawing to a defined shape with some level of smoothness. To use this tool, use the keyboard shortcut SHIFT + S. You can use the control panel to choose the level of recognition and smoothness.
